Local businesses have a unique opportunity to help future-proof their businesses, inspire the next generation and strategically recruit their future workforce – with the release of two new resources from the Cairns Regional Jobs Committee (RJC).
The Work Experience Guide for Business and the Employer Guide to School-Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships were officially launched today at a special breakfast event.
Designed specifically for employers, these practical guides walk businesses through every step of engaging young people – from offering meaningful work experience placements to employing school-based apprentices and trainees. The resources highlight benefits to business, such as:
- Unlocking a smarter recruitment strategy by identifying future talent early.
- Strengthening ties with local schools and the community.
- Promoting their business profile as an industry leader.
- Helping shape the next generation of skilled workers.
The Cairns Chamber of Commerce is committed to supporting our business community to grow the workforce of the future.
“The release of these publications will equip business owners and HR managers with practical, easy-to-use tools to help them attract and develop their future workforce. This is particularly important in such a competitive labour market.” said Chamber CEO, Patricia O’Neill
Cairns RJC Project Manager Janelle Yarwood said the guides were developed after months of consultation with local employers, schools, government and industry partners.
“Hosting a work experience student or employing a school-based apprentice isn’t just about giving back – it’s an investment in your business and a clever recruitment strategy.” she said.
Although work experience isn’t new, making it meaningful and impactful is! One of the most flexible and effective ways to invest in your business is by onboarding a school-based apprentice or trainee – enabling students to combine their senior schooling with paid work and nationally recognised training.”
The launch event featured Ursula Donnellan, the Business & Quality Manager from Mark Fletcher Solid Texture and Plaster Coatings. She is a passionate advocate for the construction industry, engaging high school students, women and diverse communities – to foster greater inclusion and opportunity in the sector. The winner of the 2024 Regional Master Builders Queensland Women in Building award, Ursula is currently serving as the FNQ Industry Champion for Master Builders and this year- she started an Apprenticeship – and is currently working toward her Cert III in Solid Plastering. Proof of lifelong learning and a career change is possible at any age!
We heard from the inspiring Hannah Morgan – a year 11 student at Redlynch State College who is currently undertaking a Cert III Dental Assistant. Hannah plans to go to JCU and study dentistry after completing school. The Regional Director of the Department of Employment, Trade and Training, Grant Stidiford and local Apprentice Connect Coordinator, Jason Dent from Mas National spoke about the projected employment growth, key occupations in demand, emerging opportunities and incentives for businesses.
Attendees were the first to receive copies of the guides and discover how to implement these strategies in their own businesses.
Kimberley Campbell from Little Sparrows Therapy said,
“few moments are as rewarding as seeing a former student return to the clinic — not as a learner, but as a skilled professional. Hearing someone say that you were the reason they chose this path is the kind of impact that stays with you forever.”
