Michael Hansen

Michael is an experienced and award-winning educator who has worked across Far North Queensland and remote communities since 1990 when he commenced teaching at Cairns State High School. He has held significant leadership roles including Head of Department at Kowanyama State School, senior positions at Western Cape College in Weipa, and Principal of Doomadgee State School, where he also served as Director of Government Coordination and led the development of a Local Indigenous Partnership Agreement with the community. As Principal of Cairns West State School, Michael introduced the Academic Success Guarantee, driving major improvements in student outcomes and earning the school the Queensland Showcase Award for Academic Excellence in 2011. His leadership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education was recognised nationally when he received the Australian Government Minister’s Award for Excellence – Australian Principal of the Year in 2012. Michael has been the Executive Principal of Redlynch State College since 2021.
