Who knew a small town in North Queensland could spark a passion for banking? For Dakota Freeman, that’s exactly what happened. Initially drawn to a career in culinary arts, her participation in Maxima’s Indigenous Employment Program opened her eyes to a whole new world of possibilities.
While North Queensland’s Ravenshoe may not be known for its bustling financial sector, Dakota’s journey began there. Reflecting on the program, Dakota’s enthusiasm shines through, “the program equipped me with valuable skills I wouldn’t have had otherwise, like explaining complex financial products in a clear and easy-to-understand way. Now, I can truly connect with customers and help them find the best solutions for their needs.”
Now located at a Westpac branch in Cairns, Dakota thrives in the supportive environment fostered by Westpac and Maxima’s partnership. Anna, Dakota’s Manager, emphasises this philosophy, saying “training young people takes time and effort, but it’s incredibly rewarding,” she explained. “We invest in our colleagues because it creates a workplace where everyone feels valued.” This aligns perfectly with the broader benefits of apprenticeships, which result in high retention rates and job satisfaction for all staff.
Anna is very satisfied with Dakota’s experience, marking “her eagerness to learn and ask questions demonstrates a strong desire for knowledge, while her bubbly personality and exceptional customer service skills make her a natural asset for any team.
With her proven experience as a teller and newfound confidence in sales, Dakota’s determination and drive to succeed will undoubtedly benefit both Westpac and its customers.”
Westpac’s investment in programs like the Indigenous Employment Program, coupled with partnerships like Maxima to employ Indigenous students, demonstrates a genuine commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. Additionally, Westpac’s focus on involving all staff to complete Indigenous Cultural Awareness training allows for an understanding environment where young talent can succeed.
The Cairns Regional Jobs Committee has commended this collaboration with industry, highlighting its role in providing local youth with opportunities to grow and develop while remaining in the region. This type of initiative not only enhances their skills but also strengthens our future workforce. Dakota exemplifies how dedication and commitment can lead to a successful career path.
